DAVID BEDFORD

Nationality British

Born 4 August 1937

Semi-finalist work The Sultan's Turret

The Sultan's Turret was commissioned by the BBC for 'Sounding the Century'. It was performed and recorded by the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall in April 1999.

David Bedford began composing at the age of seven and went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music with Lennox Berkeley. In the late 60s he played keyboards with Kevin Ayers' 'The Whole World' which led to numerous collaborations with musicians from the rock world including most notably Mike Oldfield, Elvis Costello, Roy Harper, Billy Bragg and many more. For over 35 years he has received commissions from major orchestras, festivals, ensembles and soloists, including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and four commissions for the BBC Proms.

Other commissions include a piece for the Academy of Ancient Music, which went on tour in the spring of 2001, and for the Crouch End Festival Chorus and Orchestra, featuring Arthur C. Clarke, performed in July 2001 at the Royal Festival Hall, London.


DEREK BERMEL

Nationality American

Born 14 October 1967

Dust Dances was recorded by the Norwalk Symphony Orchestra in 1998.

Derek Bermel had a very varied musical training from studying composition at Yale University and the University of Michigan with William Albright, Louis Andriessen, William Bolcom and Michael Tenzer to studying ethnomusicology and orchestration in Jerusalem.

Bermel's music has been recognised by many of the major awards in the US, including a Guggenheim award, a Fulbright Fellowship, several ASCAP young composer awards and residencies at Tanglewood, Banff and Yaddo. Many of Bermel's passions converge in his work as music director of the arts collective TONK. Bermel co-founded the ensemble and serves as co-artistic director alongside electric guitarist Wiek Hijmans and poet Wendy S. Walters.


STEPHEN CHATMAN

Nationality Canadian

Born 28 February 1950

Semi-finalist work Tara's Dream

Tara's Dream was commissioned by the Vancouver Symphony with assistance from British Columbia Arts Council. It was performed in January 2000 and broadcast by CBC Radio in Canada.

Chatman has won many awards and prizes for composition including a Fulbright Grant, three BMI Prizes, an MB Rockerfeller Fund grant, and the Charles Ives Scholarship from the US National Institute of Arts and Letters. He has received many commissions from the Canada Council, and the CBC Chatman's more than 60 published choral works are widely performed. His orchestral compositions have been performed by orchestras such as the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Berlin Radio Orchestra, Sydney, San Francisco and Dallas Symphonies. He is currently Professor of Composition at the University of British Columbia School of Music in Vancouver, Canada.


GRAHAM FITKIN

Nationality British

Born 19 April 1963

Semi-finalist work North

North was commissioned by the Northern Orchestral Consortium and recorded by the BBC Philharmonic. It was broadcast by BBC Radio 3 in February 1999.

Graham Fitkin studied at Nottingham University with Peter Nelson and Nigel Osborne and then went on to study at Koninklijk Conservatorium, Den Haag. From 1991-4 Fitkin was appointed Programme Director for the SPNM UK. In the past Fitkin's works have been performed by the New York City Ballet, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.


ANTHONY GIRARD

Nationality French

Born 14 May 1959

Semi-finalist work Deux Prieres pour la fin de la Guerre

Girard studied Musicology at the University of Paris Sorbonne before taking his maitrise and DEA. Girard has won many prizes for composition, including the International Competition of Besancon (1988), the Concours International de la Fondation Musicale des Iles Beleares and the Prix Paul Belmondo de l'Institut de France. Currently Girard teaches composition at the Conservatory of Rouen.

Many of Anthony Girard's works have been published by Editions Billaudot in France.


JOHN PETERSON

Nationality Australian

Born 14 January 1957

Semi-finalist work Illawarra Music

John Peterson was shortlisted for Masterprize 1998 (with his piece Rituals in Transfigured Time). Although he did not reach the final stage of Masterprize 1998, Rituals in Transfigured Time was subsequently recorded by the National Orchestra of Wales and broadcast widely on BBC Radio 3 and ABC Classic FM in Australia.

Peterson was a freelance percussionist, pianist, band master and music teacher before commencing composition studies at the University of Sydney in 1986, and he is currently completing a PhD in composition. Peterson has written music for and has had his music performed by many groups including the Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra, the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and the West Australian Symphony Orchestra. Peterson is currently working on a commission for the West Australian Symphony Orchestra.


FINNUR TORFI STEFANSSON

Nationality Icelandic

Born 20 March 1947

Semi-finalist work De Amore

Stefansson started his professional career as a lawyer and was very active on the political scene in Iceland as a municipal council member and as a member of the Icelandic Parliament.

In 1984 Stefansson completed a degree in theory and composition at the Reykjavik College of Music and continued his studies at the University of California, Los Angeles. Having received an MA he went on to study composition with Brian Ferneyhough and Roger Reynolds at the University of California, San Diego.

A number of Stefansson's works have been performed and recorded in Iceland.
