Masterprize 1998 attracted a degree of media interest probably unparalleled in recent years by any other classical music competition. This was partly because of the uniquely ambitious scale of Masterprize and the fact that the voting included a public element. However, the main reason was the opportunity it provided to discuss how to rebuild the bridge between living composers and the music-loving public. Increasingly, musicians are coming to recognise that if this is not achieved, there is a serious risk that classical music will atrophy. The start of the new century will give renewed impetus to this debate. For this reason, we are confident that Masterprize will be able to build strongly on our existing public profile. A key element in Masterprize is the very active support of a wide network of prestigious broadcasting organisations, who not only broadcast the music, but spread awareness of the whole process and purpose.
