Masterprize - the Leading International Composing Competition announces groundbreaking Education Programme
After the success of the last programme in 2001, Masterprize has extended its Education Programme nation-wide for 2003 to create one of the most ambitious music education schemes for British youth orchestras to date. Orchestras of international repute, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, and the National Association of Youth Orchestras have joined existing partners, the London Symphony Orchestra to enable Masterprize to increase the scale of the Programme two-fold and invite 13 youth orchestras from around the country to participate. Regional Events The 2003 Education Programme will include major events at the Symphony Hall in Birmingham, and the Philharmonic Hall in Liverpool. It will also be one of the first projects to make use of the LSO Discovery's stunning newly renovated education venue - St Luke's. At each event the participating youth orchestras will perform one of the six finalist pieces of the Masterprize 2003 competition. The event will start with the youth orchestras taking part in coaching sessions given by musicians from the partner orchestras on their chosen Masterprize piece. They will then attend a series of specially co-ordinated workshops and seminars which will be given by some of the country's leading animateurs and which will include subjects as diverse as rapping, gospel singing, music technology and audition technique. Each event will culminate with a public showcase concert by the youth orchestras of their Masterprize finalist piece. At these concerts a recording will be made and then sent to Vladimir Ashkenazy, who will award prizes for the performances he most appreciated. Some of the participating youth orchestras have chosen to hold their workshop and performance events at their own rehearsal space to which the musicians from the partner orchestras will travel. After the coaching workshops, the youth orchestras will give a performance of their chosen Masterprize finalist piece which will also be recorded and sent to Vladimir Ashkenazy. Finals award Representatives from all the participating youth orchestras will then be invited to London on the afternoon of Thursday 30th October 2003 to attend a special programme of events prior to the Gala Final of Masterprize that evening. During the afternoon youth orchestra musicians will have the opportunity to see the professionals at work when they hear the London Symphony Orchestra rehearse the finalist pieces in the Barbican Hall. Meanwhile at St Luke's, another group of the young musicians will be participating in specially created interactive workshops lead by leading LSO Discovery Animateurs. The groups will swap activities and then will all come together at the end of the afternoon to meet the Masterprize finalist composers and chat to representatives from the Masterprize partner organisations, Classic FM, Gramophone and Classic FM Magazines and EMI Classics, about working in the Arts. The day will culminate with the youth orchestra members attending the Masterprize Gala Final at the Barbican Hall, where they will be able to spot the celebrities and listen to the LSO play the six Masterprize finalists' pieces. At the end of the concert, while the judging of the main competition is taking place, the youth orchestra members will be able look out for glimpses of themselves in the film that will be shown in the main hall of the regional events and workshops. They will then find out which performances Vladimir Ashkenazy most appreciated. Cash prizes of £1,500, £1,000 and £500 will be presented to the top three youth orchestras.
