VLADIMIR ASHKENAZY
In 1989 he was appointed Chief Conductor and Music Director of the Deutsche Symphonie-Orchester Berlin. During this time he has won with his orchestra a reputation not only for fine performances but for creative and imaginative concert programming all over the world. He has appeared as guest conductor with the world's finest orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Boston Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony and Concertgebouw Orchestras. More recently he has established a regular collaboration with the St Petersburg Philharmonic. For more than 30 years Vladimir Ashkenazy has been an exclusive artist with Decca Records, and the fruits of this long collaboration have been prodigious. For Vladimir Ashkenazy, music is his world and in it there are no frontiers.
MICHAEL BERKELEY
His recent successes include Baa Baa Black Sheep, based on the childhood of Rudyard Kipling. Since then, a number of highly successful works have further consolidated Berkeley's growing reputation. In January 1998, Secret Garden - a joint commission for the LSO and OUP - was premiered by the LSO under Sir Colin Davis at the Barbican Hall to widespread critical acclaim. Michael Berkeley has been Artistic Director of the Cheltenham International Festival since 1995. He is also a well-known broadcaster and Chairman of the Royal Opera House Opera Board.
THOMAS HAMPSON
Soloist of choice for today's foremost conductors and the pre-eminent recitalist of his generation, his operatic roles span a wide range of repertoire from Rossini to Verdi and Puccini and from Monteverdi to Britten and Henze. The most prolific and diversely recorded artist of his generation, he has made an exclusive commitment to EMI Classics for solo repertoire and was chosen to be the Company's Artist of the Year in 1997.
MICHAEL KAMEN
He has co-written three of the biggest-selling singles of all time: Everything I do (I do it for you), All for Love and Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman? Among Kamen's numerous film scores are the three "Lethal Weapon" movies, "Die Hard" (I, II, III), "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves", "The Three Musketeers", "James Bond - License to Kill", and most recently, Disney's "101 Dalmatians". For his score of "Mr Holland's Opus" he won a Grammy award. His TV series scores include Edge of Darkness with Eric Clapton, for which they won England's coveted BAFTA and Ivor Novello awards. He has written music for more than ten ballets for companies including Milan's La Scala and New York's Joffrey Ballet.
SIR GEORGE MARTIN
As a producer, he has been responsible for bringing not only musical artists into the studio but some of our greatest comedians such as Peter Sellers, Spike Milligan, Flanders and Swann and the "Beyond the Fringe" team of Jonathan Miller, Peter Cook, Dudley Moore and Alan Bennett. He has also worked with many legendary jazz artists, including Cleo Laine, John Dankworth, Humphrey Lyttelton and Stan Getz. More recently George has produced the double album Beatles at the BBC and The Beatles Anthology collections. A composer in his own right, he has scored a considerable number of films, among them "Yellow Submarine" and "Live and Let Die". The author of three books, he is also involved in several TV documentaries and is currently working on a series for BBC1. |
