On the 5th October the final regional event of the Masterprize Education Programme took place in the stunning newly refurbished LSO Education Venue - LSO St Luke's. Both Cambridge Youth Orchestra and Bromley Youth Orchestra had already received their coaching from members of the LSO the week before and came together for a day's event in St Luke's. In the morning both orchestras were given the opportunity to make a recording using the excellent acoustics of St Luke's and with the expertise and help of the LSO sound engineers. The afternoon culminated with a public concert of their Masterprize work and other pieces from the youth orchestra's standard repertoire. Masterprize was delighted that once again Jamie Crick from Classic FM was able to present the concert.

The final coaching session of the Masterprize Education Programme took place in Eastleigh, Hampshire where the Hampshire County Youth Orchestra received coaching from members of the LSO before a recording was made of its performance. At every regional event and workshop Masterprize took a recording of the performances of the chosen pieces and sent the recordings to Maestro Vladimir Ashkenazy.

The Masterprize team would like to extend its thanks to all the coaches, staff and performers at each orchestra who have shown great hospitality and commitment at each event.

Finals award

Members from all 13 participating youth orchestras, totalling around 500 young musicians, came to London's Barbican Centre on the afternoon of 30th October for an exciting afternoon of events before attending the gala final concert in the evening. During the afternoon youth orchestra musicians had the opportunity to see the professionals at work when they heard the London Symphony Orchestra rehearse the six finalist pieces in the Barbican Hall. Meanwhile at St Luke's, another group of the young musicians were participating in a unique creative improvisation and rhythm workshop, trying the amazing new Balinese Gamelan at St Luke's or taking part in an R&B vocal workshop, all lead by leading music education animateurs. The groups then swapped activities and they all came together at the end of the afternoon for a special reception in the Brewery where they met the Masterprize finalist composers and took part in a specially created quiz, devised in collaboration with the Masterprize partner organisations, Classic FM, Gramophone and Classic FM Magazines and EMI Classics.

In the evening the youth orchestra members attended the Masterprize Gala Final at the Barbican Hall, where they were able to spot the celebrities and listen to the LSO play the six Masterprize finalists' pieces.

At the end of the concert, while the judging of the main competition took place, the youth orchestra members were be able look out for glimpses of themselves in the film of the regional events and workshops, that was shown in the main hall. Cash prizes of £1,500, £1,000 and £500 were then presented to the orchestras whose performance Vladimir Ashkenazy most appreciated. The prizes went to:

1st prize: Liverpool Youth Orchestra
2nd prize: Hampshire County Youth Orchestra
3rd prize: Northamptonshire County Youth Orchestra
